Dear Parents and Scouts:
Welcome to Pack 262. I am often asked “why should my son join scouts when there are so many other activities to be involved in?” Scouting is a fun program that is based on personal growth, teamwork, and responsibility. It is one of the only non-sports based activities that teaches these attributes.
Scouting teaches boys through fun activities, that they have three basic duties, those are: duty to God, duty to country, and duty to self. Duty to God is the belief that there is a supreme power that oversees all of us. Duty to country is stressed through the obligations of citizenship, from protecting our resources to following our laws. Duty to self is taught through your duties as a family member and your duty to learn and grow to the best of your ability and knowing what negative activities will keep you from being your best.
Ages and Ranks: Boys can join at anytime in Cub Scouting. The ranks are separated by grade level. 1st Grade = Tiger, 2nd Grade = Wolf, 3rd Grade = Bear, 4th Grade = Webelo 1, 5th Grade = Webelo 2.
Pack and Den, what’s that mean? The boys are separated by rank into dens. That is their primary group in scouting. They will meet as a den 2 times a month, the first and third Wednesdays of the month. When all the dens get together we are a Pack. The Pack meeting is the last meeting of the month.
Standard Meeting Times and Location:
All meetings, unless otherwise instructed, are at the Founders Village Ridge House
Den meetings: 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, 6:30 – 7:30
Pack Meeting: Last Wednesday of the month 6:30 – 7:30
Parental Obligation: Cub Scouting is a parent-son activity. You are expected to be at all den meetings with your son unless other arrangements have been agreed to with your den leader and then we ask that you be at the majority of those meetings. Pack meetings are a family affair and it is when your son will be recognized for achievements. We ask that parents make every attempt to be present for pack meetings. Tiger Cub parents, we really stress this with you. For the Tiger program to work, you need to be there.
Cost: To join Cub Scouts we collect $55.00. That includes your registration with BSA National as a Cub Scout in the Denver Area Council, it also registers your boy to receive Boy’s Life, the magazine of Scouting. A portion of that fee also goes to pay for the Pack expenses, which include expenses for meetings, advancement awards, cub scout book and neckerchief. Your den may charge a small fee for miscellaneous expenses. That fee will not be more than $20 for the year.
Fund Raising: We endeavor to have only one fund raising event and that is selling Boy Scout Popcorn in the fall.
Uniform: We require only a scout shirt, neckerchief and slide as our scout uniform. The Pack provides the neckerchief and slide. Uniforms can be purchased at the Scout Shops located in either Denver or Colorado Springs.
The Denver Area Scout Shop is located at:
10455 West 6th Avenue, Suite 125 Denver, CO 80215. 303 477 4830.
Their hours are: Mon-Fri 9AM–6PM, Sat 9AM–3PM.
The Hibbard Memorial Scout Shop in Colorado Springs is located 1 block West of I25 Exit 145 at:
You can also purchase online at ScoutStuff.org . You will need to purchase a Cub Scout shirt, council strip, Pack numbers (262), and a world scouting patch. Your son can wear more of the uniform if he wishes, but this is the minimum we require.
We suggest you buy the scout shirt one size too big as your boy will wear the blue uniform at least to Webelo 2 (fifth grade). At Webelo 2 your son can wear the tan Boy Scout uniform and can continue wearing that shirt into Boy Scouts.
Questions: As your Cub Master, and Asst. Cubmaster, we are responsible for the overall running of the Pack, so if you have concerns, you can always feel free to contact either of us.
