Our Cub Scouts collected and saved soda cans from August to the November Pack meeting where they were all collected in a trailer to be recycled. This was the 1st year that Pack 262 took on the goal to raise money for Children’s Hospital. The boys recycled 400 Lbs. of soda cans that raised $225 for gifts to given to the Children at Children’s Hospital.

SOON, WE’LL BE entering the season in which “Peace on Earth” will be on the lips of many as we embrace the holidays. I can’t think of a better time of year to encourage everyone in the Boy Scouts of America to take part in World Scouting’s Messengers of Peace initiative.

Messengers of Peace is a 10-year effort by the 161 National Scout Organizations of the World Organization of the Scout Movement to involve individual Scouts, as well as the national Scout organizations from all six worldwide regions, in peace-building activities.

As a part of this program, Scouts from all over the world can earn international recognition in the form of “Mini Nobel Prizes” for significant community-service projects. This idea was conceived in the belief that through these acts of community service, Scouts across the world can contribute to world peace.

It’s a marvelous notion, and I can’t say enough about the support of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia (a great friend of Scouting) and King Carl Gustaf of Sweden (the Honorary Chairman of the World Scout Foundation) for launching this initiative in September. We know that Scouts all over the world already are active in peaceful endeavors. Through Messengers for Peace, the hope is that Scouts will take those existing community programs and expand their impact toward global peace.

No matter whether Scouts are from Saudi Arabia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Mexico, or Des Moines, Iowa, they all share a common bond. Never before havewe intentionally focused the attention of 30-million-plus Scouts around the world on the idea that no matter where they live, they can participate in fostering peace through community service. More information on the application process can be found at messengersofpeace.info.

Messengers of Peace is an inspiring way to gather our young people to bring calm to a world that’s so desperately in need of acts of kindness. My holiday wish for the BSA is that we set the example for others as we take part in this historic moment for world peace.

Four courses are required for most Cub Scout leaders to wear the “Trained” emblem and are required by the BSA and the Denver Area Council does log in and check to make sure you are trained. You will have to create an account and then log in for training.

Youth Protection Training (YPT): Online @ www.MyScouting.org
This course is mandatory abd should be completed as soon as possible. Online, it guides you on the do’s and don’ts of working with youth. At all times, the youths’ safety is the number one priority. At the same time, a leader needs to know the rules for keeping him/herself safe, too. YPT is a required for all den leaders. Youth Protection Training maybe completed via www.MyScouting.org.

Fast Start Training: Online @ www.MyScouting.org
To be completed prior to first meeting with youth Fast Start Training provides an immediate comfort level for the new leader and enables the leader to say, “I can do this!” Fast Start training is to be taken immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member. Cub Scout Leader Fast Start training is a series of position-specific segments. Each segment gives information and planning on conducting the first meeting and even demonstrates a meeting you can use. The Cub Scout segments include: Tiger Cub Den Leader Cub Scout Den Leader Webelos Den Leader Cubmaster Pack Committee Member ScoutParent Coordinator.

This Is Scouting: Online at www.MyScouting.org
This component of basic training for all program areas is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers – Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders – take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes This Is Scouting only once.

Leader Specific Training: Approximately 3 hours – classroom course OR Online @ www.MyScouting.org
Cub Scout Leader Specific training provides the specialized knowledge a leader needs to assume a leadership role within their Cub Scout pack. Specialized instruction is carried out for pack committee members, Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, and their assistants, and pack trainers. The first half of this training session includes two modules: Introduction to Cub Scouting and How We Have Fun (90 minutes total).
The next 90 minutes is a specialized session tailored to your specific position in Cub Scouting. When a Cub Scout leader changes position, he must take this leader specific training for that new position in order to be considered “trained,” but does not have to repeat Introduction to Cub Scouting and How We Have Fun.

If anybody has some great photos of the JC Bear event they would like to share, please email them to me through ScoutTrack. I will then see about putting together a slideshow to post here as well as include them in my presentation that was never shown at the Blue and Gold. In ScoutTrack you can find me listed under E-Mail your Pack Leaders if you have never gotten an email from me before to respond to. Keep up the great work Pack 262 parents!

Where – Rock Ridge Elementary School

Please bring the entire family as we celebrate the accomplishments of our WEBELOS II and say farwell as they move on to the new and exciting adventures of Boy Scouts with Troop 260. Bring a friend or neighbor that is interested in Scouting to witness this event. It all starts at 6:15pm with a color guard ceremony followed by the handing out of the final awards the WEBELOS have earned. It then changes with the great story tellings by JCBear of the Cub Scout path and finishing up with their final path of crossing over to Boy Scouts and being accepted into Troop 260 lead by Pat Jones.

We recently took the time to do a little updating to the Pack’s website. I tried to keep the new templete very simple. The last one was getting quite dated and the Pack was looking for a few new features. So here it is.

One of the main features we wanted to accomplish with this update was the ability to easily filter content. In the past few years our Pack has seen significant growth. This can make communication very difficult. Having a well organized website is one of the keys. This new site will allow parents, family memebers, and even Scouts the ability to filter to his or her rank for News and Update.

The image on the left shows what happens when you hover over the ‘NEWS BY RANK’ filter. All you have to do is move you mouse over your son’s rank and click. This will show only the posts that are deadicated to his particular rank. News in this area could be alerting to a change of meeting location or time. It could also let you know of something your son has to get accomplished before the next meeting.

Hopefully this new feature will help our readers get right to the information that effects them in the quickest possible way. You can still read ALL of the pack new by clicking the ‘NEWS’ filter. All of the Pack’s news and updates will be posted in that filter.

In addition to this new filter feature we are adding a photo gallery. UPDATE: The gallery is hosted right her on the site. Families can upload photos via this page. Along with photos comes responsibility. No where on the site will we include first or last name with photographs. I have also added a new release form. This will allow you to opt out of any pictures of your son being posted on the pack website. If you would like to opt out please get these forms to your Den Leader as soon as possible.

Here is a direct link to the form: Pack262-Photo-Release-Form

There are quite a few new features that we don’t have time to mention here just yet, but this should get you started. We hope you enjoy the new features and design. I have left comments open to get your feedback and to answer any questions you may have.

I know a while back there was talk of creating a private area on the web so parents could post and share pictures of Pack 262 activities and security was a concern.

I have created a Private Pack 262 Facebook Page so parents could post and share.

According to Facebook it’s a Secret Status:

These groups cannot be found in searches, and non-members can’t see anything about the group, including its name and membership list. The name of the group will not display on the profiles of members.

You do have to be a member of Facebook to gparticipte though.

“How do I join this group?”

To join a group, click “Request to Join this Group” under the group picture on the right side of the screen. You can also be added to a group by a friend who is already a member.

Since groups require admin approval for you to join, you may have to wait for an admin to confirm your request before you can join the group. Admins can also block specific people from joining a group.

Certain groups on Facebook are secret and will not appear in search results. You cannot request to join these. Only being added by an existing member will give you access to those.

You will have only one shot to join this group according to Facebook.

“I rejected an invitation to a secret group.”

How can I get a second invitation?” Unfortunately, you will not be able to send a second group invitation to the same friend. Please tell the user to contact us directly from the login email address associated with their account. They should also make sure to include the full name and web address (URL) of the group.

This is a test to see how something like this will be received.

Please bear with me as I get the security measures hashed out as we go, things will be changing and if you don’t like whats going on, l invite you to leave the group.

What happens if a parent leader does not get trained?
The first question to be asked and answered is WHO must be trained and by when. Your Unit Commissioner is responsible to get this information to you as the Pack Trainer.

By Feb 2011 - all direct contact Cub Scout Leaders (Cubmaster, Ass’t Cubmasters, Den Leaders and Ass’t Den Leaders) and the Pack Committee Chair must have completed (and be current with) Youth Protection Training (YPT). No exceptions: Leaders without current Youth Protection Training will be dropped from the unit roster and be prevented from rechartering with the unit until this training is completed.

By Feb 2012 - all registered Cub Scout Leaders (direct contact leaders, pack committee members, pack trainer) must have completed and be current with:

Youth Protection Training (YPT)

Training for their current, registered position (Position Specific Training – PST)

The BSA holds training in high regard, is there a time frame to get it done in?
All of the required training is now online. Both YPT and PST is available online and together take no more than 3 hours to complete consecutively.

Updated 9/2/10

Troop 260 has extended an invitation to all Webelos for our annual Boy Scout/Webelo Campout.

The campout is going to be October 2-3. All Webelos are invited to attend. We will spend the night at Golden Gate State Park just west of Golden, CO. The cost is $10 per scout, leader or parent. We will meet and go up as a group early Saturday afternoon. Boys who are in sports are invited to join as after their sports are concluded on 10/2. More information will follow. (this campout also completes a requirement for Arrow of Light)

More info on the park can be found here.

In preparation of the campout all webelos are invited to join Troop 260 for a scout meeting (required for Arrow of Light) on September 14th. At that meeting their newest Eagle Scout Preston Rich will present his “How and what to pack for camping” presentation. Refreshments will also be served. Troop 260 meets at New Hope Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Meadows Parkway and Prarie Hawk Drive. (Near the theater). The meeting starts at 7 pm and concludes at 8:30.

Troop 260 would also like to extend to the Webelo II’s and any interested parents, an invitation to join them for Hunter Safety class, which is being presented by the Colorado Dept of Wildlife. The class will be on Saturday 9/25 9-3pm and Sunday 9/26 12-6 pm. The cost is $10. Anyone interested should contact Asst. Scoutmaster Michael Stowell at: michael.stowell@us.army.mil by Sept 4th.

Our next outing will be a family bike ride that will start in the Founders Park Parking lot. This is an easy ride of about 8 miles round trip and will be a nice leasure ride through the greenbelts. A map and description of the ride can be found at www.mapmyride.com/route/detail/18194970 and is called Pikes Peak Way. We will meet at the far end of the parking lot so when you first turn into the parking lot turn right, away from the pavillion, and go all the way to the end near the tunnel. We will start the ride at 6:35pm. Please make sure that you dress accordingly, bring water, and everyone must wear a helmet.

This is a reminder to everyone about our season ending BBQ & Crossover. For everyone that is new to our pack, we will be crossing all scouts over to the next rank. It is a fun and exciting time for all of the scouts.

*******THIS IS AN EVENT FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY*****

This final meeting will start at 6:00pm with the BBQ at Founders Park pavillion as long as the weather is good. If it is raining, we will have it at the Ridge House. Planning on good weather, please bring your own chairs for everyone in your family. Hotdogs, burgers, and drinks will be provided.

Tigers and Wolves, please bring either a side dish or a salad.

Bears and Webelos, please bring a desert.

We will then have the crossover and entertainment on the Basketball court next to the pavillion.

If you have any friends or neighbors that are interested in Cub Scouts, please invite them to come along with you.

Thank you all for a great year.

Hello everyone, We are now withing 1 week of our pack overnight and sorry but we are not allowed to add any more additional people to our Wildnight @ the Zoo list.

For those of you that have signed up, I have emailed everyone two documents. The word document gives you all the information that you will need for your exciting night at the zoo. It will tell you everything that you need to bring as well as a schedule of events. It also has a waivier and release form that everyone must fill out and bring with them to the event. They will ask for them at the door as you enter the zoo on Saturday.

The other PDF form is our BSA medical information form which must also be filled out by each individual that is attending, scouts as well as syblings and parents. You only need to fill out enough information for the class one portion as instructed at the top of the form.

I look to have a great time at this event. Please remember that everyone must be at the zoo no later than 6:00pm. We are all to meet out in front of the entrance gate by that time and they will escort us all inside together. Remember, you can only bring what you can carry inside with you in one trip.

See everyone at the zoo.

Just a reminder to everyone that we are having our pack meeting this Wednesday, December 16th. The main item on the agenda is the Pack overnight trip to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It will be on Saturday, January 30th beginning at 6:00pm. As long as we have at least 20 people the cost will be $33.25 per person. This includes a pizza & salad dinner and a continental breakfast. T-shirts will be available to purchase during the program for $15 and patches for $5 for $3 with a shirt. The pack will pay for each scout to receive a T-shirt and patch. Also, for adults only, they will have fold-out cots available to rent for $5 each. They will need exact change for the cots, T-shirts, and patches. We will have a sign up sheet at the pack meeting. We will need an accurate count because we need to pay for half of this by early January.

Reminder – Pack 262 will also be doing the annual bird house hike on December 26th starting at 11am at the Mitchell Gulch Park parking lot.

For everyone interested in a fun outdoor pack activity, our annual Yule Log Hunt is this Saturday, December 5th beginning at 11:00am at the Founders Park Pavilion. This will be a compass/GPS course that is set up by the Webelo 1′s and should be a fun time for all. At the end of the course will be Yule Logs for all scouts. Hot chocolate will be provided. You will need to bring your own compass or GPS as the pack does not have any extra to provide.

At 5pm on Saturday, December 5th at the Senior Citizen Center located @ the Castle Rock Recreation Center, Pack 262 will be helping the Castle Rock Lions Club (our sponsoring organization) serve their annual holiday senior dinner. It looks like we have had about 9 people committed so far and could use a few more. We would like to have at least 10 scouts and 10 adults. Please have your scout dress in full uniform with nice pants. This is an excellent community service event for the Pack and it shows our support for our sponsoring organization. Please be at the Castle Rock Rec. Center by 5:00pm.

Thank you all and have a fun weekend.

NEW YORK (AP) — A Long Island teenager has earned all 121 merit badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America. It’s an accomplishment the local arm of the organization calls “an almost unheard-of feat.”

Oceanside resident Shawn Goldsmith earned his final badge — for bugling — in time for his 18th birthday in November. He far surpassed the 21 badges required to achieve the elite rank of Eagle Scout.

He says he took about five years to earn his first 62 badges and then nearly doubled that number in a matter of months. He did it with the encouragement of his grandmother, who died shortly before he reached his goal.

The pack would like to thank those Cub Scouts that had a full page of popcorn sold this year. If your Scout sold a full page please choose a size and sleeve style in the second row of the form. The shirt for your Scout is free. Thanks for selling a full page of popcorn this year!

As a pack, it would be nice for all the Cubs to have the same style of casual shirt. This is great for camping trips and other casual scouting events. Therefore the pack is selling the shirts to everyone who does not qualify for the free shirt. The shirts range from $8 – $10.

Please complete the form and fax it to: 720-229-0451. Please include your email address in the form so you can get a confirmation of the order emailed to you. You can also email this form to: awards@lawofthepack.com

Please have the form completed and returned by the December Pack Meeting…That’s Wednesday. Order forms will be available at the Dec 17th Pack Meeting. Please prepay for all your orders.

The shirts will be printed in White on a Navy Shirt. Here is a mock of what a short sleeve version will look like.
